Fukuoka Softbank establishes new "R&D Lab" for high-precision analysis of pitching and batting

Fukuoka Softbank has established a new "R&D Lab" inside MIZUHO PayPay Dome to conduct highly accurate measurement and analysis of pitch and batting motions. The "R&D Lab" utilizes various technologies such as motion capture and force play to comprehensively measure and analyze body movements, force generation, and ball and bat behavior. The data obtained will be used to identify players' challenges, provide feedback, and consider training strategies.

Until now, detailed motion measurements were mainly conducted at the farm facility in Chikugo, but with the establishment of the new "R&D Lab," high-precision measurements and analyses will now be possible inside MIZUHO PayPay Dome. By creating an environment where measurements, analysis, feedback, and training can be carried out at the home stadium of the first team where games and practices are held, the quality and speed of support for each individual player will be improved. A trial run will be conducted during this season, and full operation will begin next season.

▼What is R&D?▼
"Research & Development" is an abbreviation that refers to efforts to improve player performance based on data analysis and scientific approaches. Fukuoka Softbank uses the latest analytical equipment to comprehensively research the movements of pitcher and hitter, the effects of training, etc., and utilizes this information in player development and team strategy.

▼Main measuring instruments▼
① "Kinatrax": A motion capture system. It uses high-speed cameras to accurately measure body movements during pitch and batting, and visualizes the movements of each part of the body as data.
② "force play (Bertec)": Measures ground reaction force. It measures the "ground reaction force," which is the force acting on the body from the ground during pitch and batting, in three dimensions, capturing the magnitude, direction, and timing of the force.
③ "Hawk-Eye": Measures pitch and batted balls. Acquires pitch data such as ball speed, spin, and break, and batting data such as batted ball speed, launch angle, and swing.
